Washington Post Urges Dems to Reopen

Well, well, well — when The Washington Post starts wagging its finger at Democrats for dragging out a government shutdown, you know things have gone completely off the rails.

It’s not every day the left’s favorite megaphone dares to hold its own accountable. Yet here we are, with Chuck Schumer and his Senate sidekicks keeping the government shuttered for nearly a month because — brace yourselves — he’s worried about a primary challenger in 2028. Priorities, right?

The editorial board, trying its best not to sound too annoyed, basically called out Senate Democrats for holding food stamps, paychecks, and basic government functions hostage in the name of… extending Obamacare subsidies. Yes, because apparently, more federal spending on a program that was already slapped together like IKEA furniture without instructions is somehow more urgent than making sure low-income families can eat next week.

And here’s where it gets really rich: Democrats are openly admitting they won’t pass a clean funding bill because — wait for it — they don’t want to “give up their leverage.” That’s political speak for “we’d rather score a win for our donor base and talking points than ensure the government actually works for the people.”

Even the USDA, not exactly a hotbed of right-wing hysteria, is warning that SNAP benefits are running out fast — and that $5 billion contingency fund everyone keeps pointing to? Yeah, turns out it’s not legally available. So families, especially the ones Democrats claim to care so much about, could literally start going hungry while Schumer plays a game of ideological chicken with taxpayer-funded subsidies.

But hey, no worries — because as The Post notes, most Americans “haven’t felt a discernible impact” from the shutdown… yet. Well, that’s changing. Food benefits, paychecks, and government services are all on the chopping block, but rather than fix the situation, Democrats are holding out for a better press release. Meanwhile, federal workers are getting squeezed harder than a lemon in a juice bar. Even the government unions — typically reliable Democratic foot soldiers — are losing patience. The American Federation of Government Employees has flat-out said, “Enough.”

And let’s not gloss over the convenient timing of the upcoming off-year elections. According to The Post, Schumer and Jeffries are eyeing victories in New Jersey, Virginia, and New York City as some kind of moral license to keep the government closed while playing brinkmanship. Because if Democrats win a few local races, suddenly that’s a green light to keep federal agencies offline and millions of Americans in limbo? Sounds like fantasy football politics — all strategy, zero substance.

But don’t worry, Chuck Schumer’s long game is alive and well. He’s apparently haunted by the liberal mob that came after him earlier this year when he dared — dared — to work with Republicans to keep the government open. So now he’s overcorrecting by refusing to blink, hoping to avoid being outflanked by the socialist wing of his own party. That’s leadership in 2025: make the country suffer now so your future Senate primary doesn’t get hijacked by a TikTok activist.

It’s not even about Obamacare. It’s about power. Schumer wants leverage. The Democrats want leverage. And in the meantime, working-class Americans — the ones who can’t afford to miss a paycheck or see their grocery assistance disappear — are the ones paying the price.

And just to put a nice bipartisan bow on it, The Post decided to do what every establishment outlet does when Democrats screw up — remind us that Ted Cruz once shut down the government in 2013. Because of course. If they’re going to call out Schumer, they have to slap a Republican too — even if it was over a decade ago.

Classic.
