Tragedy struck the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Friday morning after an explosion at the Biscailuz Training Center in East L.A. left at least three deputies dead. And while most people with a pulse would be focused on the heartbreak of that news, leave it to the California political machine to spin it up into a sterile round of press releases and pre-packaged condolences faster than you can say “defund the police.”
According to early reports from Fox News, the explosion happened just after 7:25 a.m. when deputies were handling ordnance at the department’s Special Operations Bureau. It appears to have been a tragic accident—emphasis on “accident,” not something politically juicy that Sacramento can weaponize for once. But that hasn’t stopped the usual suspects from rushing to the scene—not to help, but to posture.

The FBI showed up, naturally. And while it’s still unclear what their actual involvement is beyond flashing badges and sipping coffee, we’re told they’re “responding.” Meanwhile, former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi posted on X (because even in the middle of a disaster, the public relations clock never stops ticking), and mentioned that she spoke with U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli about the “horrific incident.” That phrase, “horrific incident,” has already been repeated in statements like it’s been passed through a bureaucratic copy machine. Everyone wants to say the right thing, just not necessarily do anything about it.
And then there’s Governor Gavin Newsom. Yes, he’s “been briefed.” The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is “monitoring the situation” and has “offered full state assistance,” which is about as comforting as a solar-powered flashlight during a blackout. The same governor whose party spent the last several years undermining law enforcement morale now wants to wrap himself in the flag when a tragedy strikes the very people he’s made political targets.
Here’s the part nobody wants to say out loud: these deputies didn’t die in some foreign combat zone. They died at home, training to protect their community, while doing the very job California leadership has spent years trying to undermine, defund, and vilify. Remember when “defund the police” was a campaign slogan in half the zip codes of Los Angeles? Or when “reimagine policing” meant letting criminals run wild while cops were painted as the bad guys? It’s funny how fast those slogans vanish when it’s time for a press conference about dead officers.
RIP: Detectives Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Wiliam Osborn, and Victor Lemus. 🙏

You know who isn’t rushing to the scene? The folks who’ve turned law enforcement into a political punching bag, pushed for zero-bail policies, and cut funding in the name of “social justice.” Suddenly, when things go horribly wrong, they want to be the voice of calm and support. Spare us the platitudes. If you didn’t back the badge yesterday, don’t act like you’re draped in blue today.
These deputies were more than uniforms and badges. They were human beings, husbands, wives, parents—people who got up before the sun to do a dangerous job that most politicians in Sacramento wouldn’t survive for a single shift. And now, three families are preparing for funerals while the rest of us are left with more questions than answers.
What exactly went wrong at that facility? Why were they handling ordnance in a way that led to an explosion? And most importantly, will anyone be held accountable, or will this just be chalked up as another “unfortunate event” in a state that seems more focused on narrative than reality?

Thoughts and prayers are needed. However, the political doublespeak must stop long enough to honor the sacrifice made by men and women who stepped into danger when everyone else was still asleep. If California’s leadership is serious about backing law enforcement, this is the moment to prove it—not with tweets and statements, but with actual, unapologetic support. Because tragedy doesn’t care about party lines, but responsibility sure as hell does.
