We have a fascinating story about the unparalleled comedian Carol Burnett. You might remember her from the golden era of television, in renowned shows such as “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “All in the Family,” and, of course, her very own “The Carol Burnett Show.”
In a recent discussion, Burnett delved into her perspective on the current state of comedy. During an episode of the “Variety’s Awards Circuit” podcast, she observed, “They are funny and character driven, they’re not scatological or blue.” Burnett does not consider herself a prude, but she does believe today’s humor often resorts to crudeness. In her opinion, if it’s intrinsic to the character, then it’s acceptable; however, if it’s just to use coarse language, it’s not funny and is rather tiresome.
So what does comedy look like, according to Burnett? She points to “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, “All in the Family”; all shows that continue to resonate today.
Despite being 91 years old, Burnett doesn’t believe that today’s comedy measures up to “the classics of the past.” Nonetheless, her career in Hollywood is far from over. She recently earned her 23rd Primetime Emmy nomination for her role in “Palm Royale,” which has been renewed for a second season.
In a recent interview, Burnett stated that she will not retire from the industry as long as she continues to enjoy it. This enjoyment was a driving factor in her decision to join “Palm Royale.” The star-studded cast alone convinced her to participate, even before she read the script.
Burnett’s list of desired collaborators still includes a few names. Meryl Streep, known for her humor and singing abilities, and George Clooney and Bradley Cooper, for their obvious appeal.
Reflecting on her career, Burnett feels fortunate to have collaborated with over 300 individuals throughout her 11-year show run. Having been a prominent figure in show business for seven decades, she has broken barriers for women in comedy and continues to thrive at 91.
Her numerous television appearances, roles in films like Annie, and recent performances in Better Call Saul and Palm Royale have cemented her status in Hollywood.
