Jack Smith Speaks Out at House Hearing on Trump Case

Jack Smith, the ever-impartial beacon of justice, swears up and down that politics played no role whatsoever in his criminal investigations of President Donald Trump. Nothing to see here, folks! Just your run-of-the-mill, unbiased Department of Justice indicting the leading candidate of the opposition party in the middle of a presidential election season. Completely normal, right?

Smith told House Judiciary Committee members behind closed doors that the decisions to bring not one but two major criminal cases against Trump — one over the 2020 election and the other over classified documents — were based entirely on Trump’s alleged actions, not politics. Of course, we’re just supposed to take that at face value. And don’t worry, he reassured everyone that if it were a Democrat doing the same thing, he’d totally do the same. Sure, Jack. Totally believable. Like how Hillary Clinton got charged for wiping her server with BleachBit and smashing phones with a hammer. Oh wait, no she didn’t.

Now, let’s take a quick step back and look at this with a smidge of reality. The guy who fast-tracked indictments against Trump right as the 2024 campaign was heating up — and just happened to push for court dates smack in the middle of primary season — now wants to act like Lady Justice herself, blindfolded and balanced. He sought gag orders on a presidential candidate, tried to keep trials moving at lightning speed while Americans were still deciding who they want to lead them, and even subpoenaed phone data from sitting Republican members of Congress. But sure, this has nothing to do with politics. It’s just good ol’ justice at work.

And let’s not gloss over the fact that this little deposition is happening in private. Behind closed doors. Why the secrecy? If Jack Smith is so confident that he’s the embodiment of neutrality and righteousness, why not have this thing out in the open? Instead, we get sanitized snippets like his opening statement, hand-delivered to the press and conveniently framed to make him look like a principled public servant instead of, say, a political hitman with a law degree.

Democrats, of course, are already playing their predictable roles. Rep. Jared Moskowitz stepped out of the deposition long enough to tell reporters it was “boring.” That’s the strategy — downplay, distract, and dismiss. Because the last thing they want is Americans paying too much attention to the dangerous precedent this sets. If it’s considered fair game to indict a former President — and the current frontrunner for 2024 — based on flimsy legal theories and breathless interpretations of events that occurred years ago, we’ve officially crossed the Rubicon. But don’t worry, they say, it’s all above board. Nothing to do with the fact that Biden’s approval rating is in the basement and his DOJ seems obsessed with neutralizing his top political opponent.

Smith may have “taken full ownership” of the charges — which is cute PR language — but it doesn’t change the fact that this entire charade reeks of political theater wrapped in legalese. You can dress it up in grand jury indictments and carefully worded statements all you want, but to millions of Americans, it looks exactly like what it is: selective prosecution dressed up as justice.

And perhaps the biggest irony here? Smith is insisting this is all apolitical while defending an effort that has only increased Trump’s support in the polls. The more they indict him, the more his base rallies. It’s almost as if Americans are waking up to the fact that this weaponization of the justice system isn’t just about Trump — it’s about them. About sending a message that if you stand in the way of the ruling class, they’ll come for you next.

But hey, as long as Jack Smith says it’s not political, we’re just supposed to believe it.
