Well, here we are again — another day, another protest where the rules don’t apply as long as your outrage is pointed in the “right” direction. This time it’s outside a U.S. Coast Guard base in Alameda, California, where a peaceful protest — and yes, I’m using that term with a raised eyebrow — turned into a scene out of a made-for-TV thriller when a U-Haul driver thought it’d be a brilliant idea to back his truck toward a line of armed Coast Guard personnel.
Let’s just get this part out of the way: when someone reverses a vehicle aggressively at uniformed federal officers who’ve been issuing verbal commands to stop, it’s not a “misunderstanding.” That’s a threat. A clear one. And anyone who’s not blinded by their hashtag activism should be able to understand that. But instead of holding the driver accountable for what could easily be construed as attempted vehicular assault, the narrative we’re spoon-fed is that this was just another case of law enforcement overreacting to a situation filled with love and peace.
Yes, really — love and peace. That’s how one protester, a minister named Jorge Bautista, described it. “It is our responsibility to express love and be on the side of peace,” he said, as dozens gathered to protest plans by the Trump administration to enforce existing immigration laws. Because apparently, asking people to follow immigration law is now a violent act. The true injustice, in their eyes, is not the illegal entry into the country, or the rising crime rates in cities burdened by unchecked immigration — it’s federal officers daring to do their jobs.
Now, let’s talk about that U-Haul again. It had been parked outside the base for hours, according to witnesses. Then — out of nowhere — the driver slams it into reverse, speeding backward toward officers who are literally blocking the entrance. That’s not a peaceful gesture. That’s not love. That’s someone playing stupid games and tempting very serious prizes.
Coast Guard personnel followed protocol: they issued commands, the driver ignored them, and then they acted to protect themselves. That’s called doing your job. That’s called self-defense. And let’s be honest — if the situation were reversed, and a group of MAGA-hatted protesters had gathered outside a federal facility and one of them pulled this same stunt, we’d be knee-deep in MSNBC segments about “domestic terrorism” and “threats to democracy.” But because this all happened under the banner of anti-Trump resistance, suddenly it’s the Coast Guard that needs to be scrutinized? Give me a break.
ALAMEDA, Calif. — At approximately 10:00 p.m. (PDT) on Thursday, Coast Guard security personnel standing watch on Coast Guard Island observed a vehicle driving erratically and attempting to back into Coast Guard Base Alameda.

Let’s not gloss over the fact that the driver didn’t even stick around. After being fired on — justifiably — he apparently fled the scene and then came back, casually parking the bullet-ridden U-Haul down the street like nothing happened. That’s not normal behavior. That’s not someone caught in a misunderstanding. That’s someone who’s playing games with federal security.
🚨 WOW. US Coast Guard security in California OPEN FIRE on crazed U-Haul driver who aggressively starts backing into them.
The driver looked like he was going to ram and injure or kill them.
They promptly unleashed fire and none were harmed. FAFO.👏pic.twitter.com/pvkivO0gSB

But the media, of course, is more interested in airing touching soundbites about “being on the side of love” than asking tough questions about why federal officers are being targeted during protests. This wasn’t even about the Coast Guard. It was about San Francisco — a city crumbling under the weight of its own policies — finally getting some federal pressure to clean up its act. And cue the outrage, because we all know how the Bay Area reacts when Washington doesn’t rubber-stamp their sanctuary city fantasy.
Here’s the bottom line: federal officers are not props for protest theater. They’re not there for you to yell at, intimidate, or threaten with a two-ton rental truck. They are there to uphold the law — a law that still exists, last I checked, no matter how many cardboard signs you wave around outside a base in California. And when someone threatens them, they respond — not because they want to, but because they have to.
So maybe next time, if folks want to express love and peace, they could start by not weaponizing U-Haul trucks in the name of open borders. Just a thought.
