Hey everyone, buckle up because today we’re diving into a report showing that the Democrats are starting to get really nervous.
Throughout the year, the Democratic grind toward the 2024 election has been anything but joyous. Instead, it’s been a marathon of anxiety and exhaustion. Insiders are quietly starting to admit they have anxiety that is transforming into full-blown fear. Even the party’s top strategists and officeholders are privately sweating bullets over President Joe Biden’s chances against former President Donald Trump.
Publicly, Democrats are keeping a brave face. No one wants to be the person caught on record saying they think Biden’s campaign is in trouble. But in private conversations and text messages, there’s a lot more honesty according to a report from Politico. Biden’s poll numbers have been consistently poor, which is adding fuel to the fire of their concerns. As one Democratic operative put it, “You don’t want to be that guy who is on the record saying we’re doomed, or the campaign’s bad, or Biden’s making mistakes. Nobody wants to be that guy.”
You don’t have to be “that guy.” All one needs to do is watch Biden speak.
“You don’t want to be that guy who is on the record saying we’re doomed, or the campaign’s bad or Biden’s making mistakes. Nobody wants to be that guy,” said a Democratic operative in close touch with the White House and granted anonymity to speak freely.
Despite Biden’s efforts, Trump is leading in most battleground states and has been raking in more campaign cash, widening the financial gap.
Another key detail is that Biden dipped in the polls after his campaign blitz.
The anxiety has only increased with Trump’s recent forays into traditionally Democratic strongholds like New York and New Jersey, where he’s been actively courting Hispanic and Black voters.
Folks, is Trump going to win New York? Probably not, but the fact that he went into the Bronx and held a rally really shook them up.
Top Democratic donors are being bombarded with reasons why Biden might lose – everything from immigration issues and high inflation to concerns about Biden’s age and the unpopularity of Vice President Kamala Harris. This is creating a frantic atmosphere among donors and party leaders, who are urging everyone to dig deeper into their pockets and rally more support.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey recently echoed this urgency during a fundraiser, asking attendees to not just open their wallets but to open them wider. Her message was clear: the stakes are too high to be complacent.
Biden’s camp remains optimistic, pointing to certain positive polls and Trump’s relative lack of infrastructure in key states; the general mood is one of cautious desperation.
“Trump’s photo-ops and PR stunts may get under the skin of some very serious D.C. people as compelling campaigning, but they will do nothing to win over the voters that will decide this election,” Biden campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz said. “The work we do every day on the ground and on the airwaves in our battleground states — to talk about how President Biden is fighting for the middle class against the corporate greed that’s keeping prices high and highlight Donald Trump’s anti-American campaign for revenge and retribution and abortion bans — is the work that will again secure us the White House.”
If Biden plans to fight for the middle class by raising prices and making it difficult to purchase fast food, then he’s doing a great job (sarcasm).
One has to wonder if reports are coming out like this because strategists are trying to ensure their name isn’t part of the train wreck if one occurs.
