Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister’s withdrawal from consideration as President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has sparked fresh debates within Republican circles about the ideological direction of Trump’s cabinet picks. Announced late Tuesday via X, Chronister’s decision to step aside follows mounting criticism from conservatives unhappy with his track record on several key issues.
In his announcement, Chronister expressed gratitude for the opportunity, calling the nomination “the honor of a lifetime.” He tagged Trump in the post and cited his commitment to the citizens of Hillsborough County as his reason for stepping aside. “There is more work to be done for the citizens of Hillsborough County and a lot of initiatives I am committed to fulfilling,” he wrote.

This abrupt turnaround comes just days after Trump’s selection of Chronister on November 30, a move the sheriff had initially celebrated, sharing Trump’s post and expressing excitement about the role.
Chronister’s nomination was met with immediate skepticism from conservative Republicans, who pointed to a laundry list of positions and decisions that they viewed as incompatible with the party’s values and Trump’s agenda. Critics highlighted his support for Pride Month, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, red-flag gun laws, and COVID vaccine mandates for employees. Additionally, his actions during the pandemic—such as arresting a pastor for holding a church service and enforcing lockdown measures—angered many conservatives.
Chronister’s softer stance on immigration and handling of Black Lives Matter protests, including alleged stand-down orders, also fueled opposition. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) was among the most vocal critics, citing Chronister’s pandemic-era decisions as reasons he was unfit to lead the DEA.

Matt Gaetz (R-FL) withdrew from consideration as Attorney General amidst criticism and lingering controversies. Trump quickly pivoted to nominate Pam Bondi, Florida’s former Attorney General, in Gaetz’s place.
