In a surprising turn of events, the Black Lives Matter (BLM) organization has vocally rejected the apparent anointment of Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee. This bold stance came to light in a tweet from the organization, where they outlined their concerns and objections regarding the nomination process.
The tweet began by highlighting the sequence of events that seemed to pave the way for Harris’s nomination. BLM criticized the Democratic Party’s approach, pointing out that Harris had not won any delegates in the primaries. This stark fact was used to underscore their argument that the nomination process was deeply flawed.
“A 24-hour process of talking to party bosses is not democratic, nor is it a process Democrats should be proud of,” BLM tweeted. The organization went on to express their discontent with the perceived undemocratic nature of the nomination process. “We do not live in a dictatorship. Delegates are not oligarchs. Installing Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee and an unknown vice president without any public voting process would make the modern Democratic Party a party of hypocrites. We call on the @DNC to create a process that allows for public participation in the nomination process, not just a nomination by party delegates.”

Journalist Kat Stafford reported that BLM is demanding the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to immediately host an informal, virtual snap primary across the country prior to the DNC convention in August. This call to action came just hours after Vice President Kamala Harris secured enough delegates for the nomination. BLM’s insistence on a more democratic process appears to be a direct challenge to the current trajectory of the Democratic Party.
This push for democracy within the nomination process seems to contrast with the ideological foundations of some of BLM’s chief founders, Alicia Garza, and Patrisse Cullors. Both have expressed their alignment with Marxist principles. In 2015, Garza remarked that “social movements all over the world have used Marx and Lenin as a foundation to interrupt these systems that are really negatively impacting the majority of people.” She also emphasized that it was “not possible for a world to emerge where black lives matter if it’s under capitalism, and it’s not possible to abolish capitalism without a struggle against national oppression.”
