Bill Maher Discusses Trump Tariffs

Bill Maher, the perpetually smug, left-leaning comedian who’s made a living mocking conservatives and scorning every move President Trump ever made, just said the unthinkable: Trump’s tariffs didn’t tank the economy. In fact, Maher even admitted the economy is thriving. Somewhere, an MSNBC producer just fainted into their oat milk latte.

Let’s not forget, this is the same Bill Maher who openly hoped for a recession back in 2019—just to get rid of Trump. The same guy who couldn’t wait to bash the former president’s every policy, especially when it came to China and trade. Tariffs, in Maher’s world, were supposed to be the nuclear bomb that would crater the American economy. Democrats echoed that chorus for years, pounding the narrative that Trump’s America First trade policies were “backward,” “ignorant,” and—of course dangerous.”

Except…they worked.

On his “Club Random” podcast, Maher—perhaps in a rare moment of clarity not clouded by coastal elitism—admitted that the tariff apocalypse never came. In his own words, “the stock market is at record highs,” and he doesn’t “see a country in a depression at all.” That’s right. For a man who famously said Trump was “picking a fight with the wrong bully,” he’s now looking around and realizing that maybe, just maybe, Trump was onto something.

Even more amusing is Maher’s sudden need to sound like the voice of reason. He chides his fellow liberals by saying, “Let’s work first from the reality of that, not from ‘I just hate Donald Trump,’ because that’s boring.” Oh, really? Funny how the “just hate Trump” crowd suddenly finds intellectual honesty when faced with undeniable economic data.

It’s not like the left hasn’t been wrong before—hello, Russia collusion, anyone?—but it’s still something to see one of their own admit it. Maher confesses, “I’ve got to own it,” regarding his prediction that tariffs would “f—–g sink this economy.” Imagine that: a liberal admitting Trump didn’t destroy the economy with his trade war. What’s next, CNN running a segment on border security that doesn’t blame Republicans for everything?

Cohen, Maher’s guest and progressive YouTuber, tried to soften the blow by saying this is why he doesn’t make bold predictions anymore. Translation: “We’ve been wrong so often it’s better to just stop guessing.” Not exactly a ringing endorsement for the brains behind the Democratic echo chamber.

And let’s not skip over Maher’s March meltdown about manufacturing. He ridiculed Trump’s efforts to revive American industry, asking, “Why do we want to bring back manufacturing? It’s so 70s.” Ah yes, the liberal playbook: abandon any sector that doesn’t fit the Silicon Valley utopia. Working-class Americans in the heartland? Sorry folks, Bill thinks that ship has sailed. Better hope there’s an opening at a vegan tech startup in San Francisco.

But now? With record-low unemployment (especially pre-COVID), a booming stock market, and blue-collar jobs actually returning under Trump’s policies—Maher’s starting to sweat. Because when you’ve spent years calling someone a moron only to realize his policies might have helped the average American more than your party’s elitist fantasies ever did… you’ve got to eat a little crow.

Make no mistake, Maher isn’t turning conservative anytime soon. But his admission is a crack in the liberal armor. It’s a small but satisfying moment when one of their own steps away from the echo chamber, even briefly, to say, “You know what? The guy we all mocked might’ve been right.”

And that, my friends, is what we call reality.
